Lighting Design
A landscape designed without lighting is a landscape you can only enjoy half the time. Strategic lighting extends the hours you spend outdoors, enhances the safety and security of your property, and reveals a dimension of beauty that exists only after dark — the drama of shadows, the warmth of a lit path, the sculptural quality of an uplighted tree.
At Exterior Images, lighting design is not an afterthought — it is an integral part of the landscape plan. We design lighting systems that are subtle by day and transformative by night, using techniques refined over forty-five years of practice to create environments that feel magical without being theatrical.
Lighting Techniques
Different situations call for different approaches. Uplighting transforms trees and architectural features into dramatic focal points. Downlighting from mature canopies creates the gentle, dappled effect known as moonlighting. Path lights guide movement through the landscape while defining edges and boundaries.
We also employ silhouette lighting, grazing, washing, and cross-lighting techniques — each chosen for how it interacts with the specific textures, forms, and materials in your landscape. The goal is never to flood a space with light but to sculpt it with shadow and contrast.
Safety, Security & Ambiance
Good lighting design serves multiple purposes simultaneously. Path and step lighting prevents trips and falls. Perimeter lighting deters intruders and illuminates entry points. And ambient lighting creates the atmosphere that makes an outdoor room feel inviting well into the evening.
We layer these functions so that a single lighting plan addresses safety, security, and beauty without compromise. Timers, photocells, and smart controls allow different scenes for different occasions — bright and welcoming for a party, soft and intimate for a quiet evening.
Technology & Efficiency
Today's landscape lighting is almost exclusively LED — energy-efficient, long-lasting, and available in a range of color temperatures from warm amber to cool daylight. We specify fixtures and lamps rated for outdoor use, with proper IP ratings for moisture resistance and finishes that blend with the landscape.
Our lighting plans include transformer sizing, wire runs, voltage drop calculations, and fixture placement — all documented in construction-ready drawings. Smart controls, zone dimming, and integration with home automation systems are available for clients who want programmable lighting scenes at the touch of a button.
